Barbara Casavecchia, ed.
With a conversation between Marcello Maloberti, Barbara Casavecchia, and Andrea Lissoni.

Invited to create a public work for the area around Trivero, in the Piedmont countryside, for the fifth edition of “All’Aperto” (Outdoors) – the art event organized by the Fondazione Zegna and curated by Andrea Zegna and Barbara Casavecchia – Marcello Maloberti presented his first permanent public commission, titled I baci più dolci del vino (“Kisses Sweeter Than Wine”). A “garden of delights” open to the community, it is comprised of several elements: a rose garden with about fifteen varieties of fragrant white flowers and ornamental fruit trees; monumental letters on the wall (over 30 meters long) spelling out the title of the work; a half-moon neon sign; a poetic fragment of a stage; a set of tables in concrete designed by the artist. “I chose a title that would evoke an image, a situation,” says Maloberti. “To me, the idea of a garden stands for ‘delight’, happiness, joy, desire for tenderness, a simple way of being together, devoid of rhetoric. This is a work unfolding from the desires of some of the inhabitants of Trivero. The garden experienced its first moment of community life during the opening performance, but in time it will become a space open to change, to life, without any control on my part over the events that I hope will take place there in the future, like concerts or celebrations”. The catalogue illustrates Maloberti’s project through a fine selection of images and documentation, and narrates the genesis, production and installation of this site-specific piece, as well as the performance that took place at the opening.
