Selma Alaçam – Nicolò Degiorgis
ar/ge kunst – issue #10

The tenth issue of the fanzine produced by Mousse for ar/ge kunst presents the works from a double solo show at the gallery/museum, by Turkish-German artist Selma Alaçam and Bolzano-based Italian artist Nicolò Degiorgis. Each working from the unique standpoint of his or her own background and culture, the two artists analyze the relationship between Islamic civilization and Western modernity in contemporary Europe.
For Degiorgis, the volume features a selection of photos from a project that explores Islamic places of worship in northern Italy, showing the country’s difficulty in keeping pace with a necessary civil process of evolution; for Selma Alaçam, it contains images from various works, including a seven-channel video installation in which the artist presents domestic scenes from the life of a Turkish Muslim family in Germany. The “complementary” work of the two artists is introduced with a critical text by Luigi Fassi.
